Why Is Muhurat Important for Diwali Puja?

In Hindu tradition, performing rituals at the right time, or Muhurat, ensures the best results. For Lakshmi Puja on Diwali, choosing the correct Muhurat helps in receiving Goddess Lakshmi's blessings for wealth, health, and prosperity. According to astrology, certain time periods on Diwali are considered highly auspicious, and it is believed that conducting the Puja during these times can invite positive energy into your home.

Best Muhurat for Lakshmi Puja in 2024

In 2024, Diwali falls on October 31st, and the most auspicious time to perform the Lakshmi Puja is during Pradosh Kaal, which occurs just after sunset. This period lasts for about 2 hours and 24 minutes. The specific Pradosh Kaal for 2024 is from 5:36 PM to 8:11 PM in most regions.

  • Vrishabha Lagna (Taurus Ascendant) is considered the best time during the Pradosh Kaal, especially for families, business owners, and salaried people. This period generally overlaps with 5:39 PM to 7:35 PM, making it the most ideal time for worship.

If for any reason you cannot perform the Puja during this time, you can also choose other fixed Lagnas like Vrishchika Lagna (Scorpio Ascendant) in the morning, Kumbha Lagna (Aquarius Ascendant) in the afternoon, or Simha Lagna (Leo Ascendant) at midnight.

Steps to Perform Lakshmi Puja

Here’s a simple guide to performing Lakshmi Puja at home:

  1. Clean the House: Start by thoroughly cleaning your home. Goddess Lakshmi is said to bless clean and tidy homes.

  2. Set Up the Puja Area: Choose a quiet corner in your house, spread a red cloth on a raised platform, and place a small Kalash (sacred water pot) filled with water.

  3. Place Idols of Lakshmi and Ganesha: Set the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha on the platform. Ganesha should be placed on the right side of Lakshmi.

  4. Light Diyas and Offer Prayers: Light diyas (oil lamps) around the house, offer flowers, and chant simple Lakshmi mantras. Even if you do not know mantras, heartfelt prayers work best.

  5. Perform Aarti: End the Puja by performing Aarti using a lit lamp, offering sweets, and seeking blessings from the Goddess.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Keep the Diyas Lit: It is considered auspicious to keep the diyas burning throughout the night on Diwali. This is said to keep negativity away and invite positive energy.
  • Involve Everyone: Diwali Puja is a time for family, so gather everyone together for the ritual, whether they are young or old.
